Origin : Esme Kilims

Esme is a very famous weaving village in Usak, in the west of Turkey, that is known for its fine slit weave kilims and lively designs. Wool is usually hand spun from local sheep and colours are in general softer with reds, pinks, yellows and some black often sun faded to a more pastel palette. All sizes from small to large are common, though they are always woven on upright vertical looms. Large Esme kilims often feature hexagonal medallions, either arranged in pairs or woven singularly as central motifs with small filler designs decorating the fiels and borders. The symbols used on all kilims have special meanings and can reflect the weavers desire for protection, abundance, happiness, fertility, etc Medium to fine hand spun wool is used with cotton for the warps. Esme Kilims have more detailed designs and finer weaving than other kilims in and around Usak region.
