Choosing the right rug size can completely change how a room looks and feels. A rug that’s too small can make a space feel unfinished, while the right size makes a room feel balanced, welcoming, and well put together.
This guide will walk you through exactly how to size a rug for each room, step by step.
Living Room Rug Sizing
The rug should sit under the front legs of your sofa and chairs.
This helps “anchor” the furniture together.
The rug should extend at least 20–30cm beyond each side of the sofa
Small Living Room
Minimum rug size: 160 x 230cm
Front legs of sofa on the rug
Coffee table fully on the rug
Medium Living Room
Ideal rug size: 200 x 290cm
Front legs of all seating on the rug
Large Living Room
Ideal rug size: 240 x 330cm or 300 x 400cm
Most or all furniture sits on the rug
What to Avoid
A rug that only fits under the coffee table
A rug that doesn’t touch any furniture
Dining Room Rug Sizing

6-Seater Table
Recommended rug:
200 x 290cm

8-Seater Table
Recommended rug:
240 x 330cm or 300 x 400cm

Round Table
Choose a round rug that extends
60–70cm beyond the table edge
A good rule of thumb is that area rugs should be 1 - 1.5m larger in length and width to the dining room table - you should be able to pull a chair out and sit at the table without the chair legs falling off the edge of the rug.
Placing a rug under the dining table defines the dining area without confining it.
If spills are a consideration, choose materials that are spill or stain resistant such as Heat Set Polypropylene for carefree dining.
Bedroom Rug Sizing

Queen Bed
Ideal rug: 200 x 290cm

King Bed
Ideal rug: 240 x 330cm or 300 x 400cm

Alternative Option
If you don’t want a large rug:
Use runners on each side of the bed
Or one runner at the foot of the bed
Hallway & Runner Rug Sizing
Hallway rugs should guide the eye through the space without touching the walls.
Leave 10–15cm of floor visible on each side
The rug should not touch the walls
The runner should cover most of the hallway, but not all of it
Leave space at both ends for balance
Doorway Mat Sizing
An entryway rug should be practical but still welcoming. Enough space to stand and wipe feet
Small Entry 50 x 80cm or 60 x 90cm
Large Entry 80 x 150cm
